I purchased some tanzanites from a vendor in South Africa, for potential use in a ring. I wanted to compare the pale purple to my light purple spinel.

The vendor also had a zircon and a spinel in vibrant blues for a reasonable price so I decided to gamble on them, to better evaluate the vendor and the relatively new lab they used.

My new stash, plus my pale purple spinel:




I am disappointed by the blue spinel but not surprised, as I expected it would be darker and less vivid than the vendor and the lab described and photographed. In the warm low light of my lounge, the spinel doesn't look green but does look grey. We were impressed with how sparkly it was despite being so dark. I am curious to see it in daylight.

The zircon is gorgeous. Even DH likes it! I expected some extinction based on the photograph. The colour is fantastic though, like a vivid teal, even in the warm low light of the lounge. I can't wait to see it in the daylight, as well as to try to find the inclusions. It is such a fab sparkly sea of blue and a great size too for a ridiculously good price.

The tanzanites were more bluish than my spinel, even in the warm low lights of my lounge. I won't use them with the spinel, but I do like their periwinkle colour.

And updated their response almost immediately to say:

Will let you know how they look in the daytime, but that won't be until this weekend. Already spotted some inclusions, like the one down the face of the zircon.

And just in case anyone is freaking out: no, I didn't pay even a fraction of the absurd recommended retail price.

I was just thinking this! it would make a very unique combination I think, and maybe in silver (especially after it's tarnished slightly!) :twirl:

I can see why you're in love with the zircon, nice! And the tanzes -- those will be fun to play with. Do you have any ideas for them? I'm kind of on the fence about the spinel -- hard to tell from your photos, but more in daylight might help. You got quite a nice haul, anyway -- super!

What a beautiful stash you have. I too love the zircon with the tanzanites. I was really excited to see your haul...actually was looking forward to it. Your zircon is of course my favorite because I am a blue zircon fan. :)

The photos really don't do them justice, it's like they both come alive when placed next to each other. The teal becomes more vivid, the violet becomes more violet. Even in warm light they show their blue tones with a punch, so I am very excited to see in the daytime. There is no question, the zircon is being set with the tanzanites. Although, I was thinking a pendant.

I suspect the spinel is colour-changer as it appears a deep grey purple in the warm lights and a deep grey blue (with green flashes sometimes) with the flash. We will see in the daylight. It is more sparkly than the pictures show. Charming in its own way. Unsure if I will keep it though.

Excellent. How big are the tanz? I think a pendant would be perfect for them! Any thoughts on how to set them? Just a halo?
