35.63 ct Muzo emerald ring

Catalogue notes first:

Estimate for this is $1.8 to $2.2 million. For a 35+ ct untreated awfully-clean Muzo emerald? Plus 6+ cts of diamonds? Seems they've under-estimated so they can crow when it sells for a zillion % over.

It'll definitely go for more. Putting a lower value may help them attract more people to the auction.

My oh my! Doesn't the ending auction price generally go higher than the estimate?

It's probably a quadrillion times more beautiful in person. Photos never ever do emeralds justice, let alone fine ones. *sigh* wish I could see it in person. Is there a video of it somewhere?

Just went back and checked the size - that would dwarf anyone's hand!

A video would show it much better. I searched all over & can't find one. Boo. Any bets on how far over estimate it will go?

No, but I think it's a bargain at that price. Can you imagine a ruby that size and quality, untreated, if it even exists, going for that - maybe per carat!

I still think fine emeralds are a bargain the the precious gemstone world.

Worth noting the dimensions in terms of our earlier discussion about why windowed stones are cut - this is about 25mm x 20mm x 9.5mm, where many rectangular step cut designs want a depth about 80% of the width. You could keep the length the same or adjust it to be more aesthetically pleasing, but the 'ideal' recut around 1.3:1 probably lands you a stone around 17mm x 13mm x 9.5mm with a face size less than half of the original. And my undying hatred.

It's not doing it for me, but I'm getting awfully picky in my old age...plus emeralds are a royal 8!+c# to photograph
