How would you set a 9mm Rubellite Tourmaline in a ring?

I have always liked the butterfly design, and believe I can live with larger prongs like this setting as the stone is big enough:

One with a lower profile (without the companion band):

Yup, I have found a style of prongs that I like, as in rectangular, not pointy or round.

What a beautiful look with these prongs. It will look really nice with your stone since it's rather big!!

Are you gearing towards the butterfly setting at the moment?

I am leaning towards TL's modified butterfly, and am toying with the idea of having Tsavorites instead of diamonds for sidestones! :Up_to_something: However, that may be a bit too colourful!

Another prong style that I like, with lowish ring profile (I prefer low ring profile generally, except for pearls which can't be helped!):

I like this one, with the baguette sides, the rectangular shape offset the roundness of the stone quite nicely.

This one (that Acinom posted early on) gets all of my votes. Wow.

This is really cool! Would love to see a handshot to see how this style would look on.

The BE one is the front runner, modified with a plain and wider shank, and without millgrain.

I like :appl:
But did you see the ahem... bezel

It will make a stunning combination, the red and the diamonds. Very vintage  yet very now.

I did and would probably opt for the stone to be set that way for a peace of mind.

What if the prongs were "tabbed" instead, and the side moons or traps were bezeled for a slightly more modern look?

I too LOVED the example style, and found a similar setting with white sapphire half moons for my oval malaya garnet.

I prefer more shiny white metal on show, hence I like halos with wider shank.

I like the ERD/BE setting too but would inquire as to whether their bench is experienced enough to bezel set a tourmaline without damaging it.

Valid point... The larger number of their rings is set with diamonds. And they actually did damage my stone. The damage was not major so they were able to recut the stone and maintain most of the stone.
It has been a pleasure working with them and love to do so in the future, but it's good to consider the question Chrono is raising.

Which stone of yours did they damage?

I shall have plenty of time to decide whether to set it as a ring or a pendant.

This one. My rubellite tourmaline. It got damaged during setting. They recut the stone and remade the ring...

Ooer!!! Can't remember reading about the stone being damaged while being set in the ring thread though, perhaps I had missed that bit.

Psssssst, I was hoping you have another eye candy that you have not shown us. :Up_to_something:

Yes it was written in the thread but not on the first page. And because their communication is excellent and since most of the stone was recovered I am not blaming them.

A new stash of stones like your JD sapphires? Noooooo
I am banned as you know 8-)

I guess I am not going to get into trouble of threadjacking my own thread :Up_to_something: so here you go.

JD's pale 2.5mm blue Sapphires set with the JD pink Spinel, and this combination works well for me.

Next to that set is a set of small stones for the Gypsy dome ring idea I have, with 2 new stones from JD added to the mix - a small pink Sapphire and a small grey Spinel. The Emerald, heart-cut blue Sapphire and cheapo heart cut diamond are not new.

css03dec14.jpg

Ring I have in mind for the Spinel and Sapphires in white metal:

zce507-99507y45490357851c4db6b3d34c2144233798-5088c182a097e.jpg

Also bought a trillion Citrine and a couple of 7mm sky blue Topaz.

TNTC as in Too Numerous To Count!

And my ideas keep changing, that does not help!

It keeps me going planning ahead, for jewellery products, events and holidays etc...

I have booked my monthly hair appointments up to Sep 2015 in order to plan them around hen do's, weddings and camping trips. And I have planned a trip to LA in Jul 2016, and possibly another trip to US in 2018 either to attend the PS GTG or go to Tucson gem show.

I was pleasantly surprised myself to be honest, as I thought I needed the Sapphires to be more saturated and vivid in colour.

The original idea was to set the Spinel with purple Spinel sides, however, that combination did not jump out at me (see pic below), so I returned the purple Spinels back to Jeff D:

spinels_0.jpg

I am likely to buy the inflatable tent package first in time for the camping trips in the second half of the year before I spend money on having the stones set.

Great priority setting :D
I love your highly mysterious list that continues to expand itself like an inflatable tent!
