Good day :)

I am looking to make my first loose stone emerald purchase online and need some help to understand if this is a good emerald. I do personally like the color (maybe hard to really know from photo) and i find the inclusions interesting but have read that bubble like inclusions are not good.

Does anyone have any general thoughts on this Emerald? Its 1.69ct and Colombian. Any indication on price? What should i expect to pay (ball park)?

Thanks so much in advance :)

It all depends on a reputable lab report that highlights the origin (Columbia has a premium), the type and amount of clarity enhancement. If there are surface reaching cracks along the table, I would avoid it. It appears to have whitish inclusions, which can also be a deterrent. Emeralds are hard to photograph though, and I absolutely would not buy one without a very thorough lab report preferably from AGL.

Toolhaus has some negative feedback listed for this seller that would concern me. This emerald is listed as having a UGL appraisal, cedar oiling and easy to see inclusions. Cedar oiling is common- but without a lab report the extent of any treatments are not known. My general thought is that I would not buy this emerald. And like TL has posted- it would be best to buy one with a reputable lab report.

I did a quick search and found a similar carat weight emerald on AJS. However I don't know what exactly you are looking for.

Thankyou for your replies TL and Lisa,

Lisa I do like that color of the second emerald you posted. I am basically looking for a around 1.5ct emerald cut that appeals to me (hahaha, it's hard to describe something so personal and instinctive i guess but i do like dark and vivid greens and favour colombian because thats where I first became enamoured as a 19year old backpacker :)

Is there a good online store anyone would recommend for colombian emeralds or some other way to get one a quality one without paying retail (i live in Australia and so far I'm not impressed by the retail markups)

Emeralds are one stone that I would only buy from a specialist. There are now reconstituted emeralds knocking around. Basically ground up Emeralds held together with glue (simplistic version) but some are difficult to determine from un-reconstituted gemstones. I would suggest you visit Embassy Emeralds as quite a few PSers have bought from them, been given great advice and come away happy.

I ditto the Embassy emerald suggestion. Buying emeralds off the internet can be difficult I purchased and returned emeralds from a couple different vendors before finding Embassy Emeralds.
I would not purchase the emerald you posted; too many inclusions and possibly surface reaching inclusions. I also like some of the emeralds posted on Africa gems (I think that is the name) but prices are a little high.

Try contacting Doug Menadue of Bespoke-gems.com he recently had a few amazing Colombian emeralds on offer. He's based in Sydney so the exchange rate may be in your favour.
