Can synthetic stones have feathers?

Hi all,

Question for those in the know - I picked up this lovely ring as I was really drawn to the setting actually. It's 18k with French hallmarks and the stone is this amazing red. It was advertised as possibly a spinel and after louping it today I can see it has an internal crack/feather. It is not surface reaching. I will take it to a local jeweller to try and have it identified but wondered - do synthetics even develop feathers?

Many thanks!image_2801.jpg

I know we are not supposed to talk about synthetics here at PS, but since you are trying to identify a stone and determine if it is natural, I will approach the question from that angle.

Her is a GIA article that discusses inclusions in natural gemstones; read through the article and you should find the answer to your question.

Thanks for the link. And to clarify to the mods, apologies if this request violates PS rules - just trying to learn a little more on natural gemstone properties. Thanks again.
