Hi gang, I am interested in a solitaire sapphire ring for my wife. A “right hand” ring, if you will. I’m thinking of a pear shape.

I’ve been aware of The Natural Sapphire Company for a number of years and now that I’m looking for a sapphire ring they come to mind, but I have looked at other shops as well.

I’m not generally a fan of bezel settings but NSC has a bezel setting that I like a lot (# JS663W14) http://tinyurl.com/myf52jq .... In fact, as I look at rings here and elsewhere this is my favorite by far.

The link is to 14K white gold but I am not settled on this yet. Could be 18K white or even platinum. My wife’s Tiffany engagement ring and band are platinum, as well as two pairs of awesome round/princess studs from White Flash/Brian Gavin. OTOH, I am trying to keep costs down here.

I really like this setting. It’s simple. It has a low profile with the stone set low to the band. The band is geometrically simple. I like it.

I am considering these two stones (http://tinyurl.com/k86ltpd) and (http://tinyurl.com/kr3tmrq).

Several questions and concerns come to mind

1- Is the size of these stones appropriate for a ring? I want something small and dainty, not a huge cocktail ring. But are these stones “too small”? We are not fancy people.

2- Can you comment on the color of these stones? I know that some colorations are preferred for sapphires, etc. Is the more expensive stone really worth almost double the cost of the first, considering they are nearly the same size?

3- Comment on the quality of these?

4- Now the elephant. I recently read through several threads here at Pricescope and found a number of complaints about NSC. But also a number of posters who were quite favorable about NSC. I recently dealt with Brian Gavin strictly by long distance…but that was due to my past experience dealing with him in-person when he was with White Flash (let me plug both those companies again!) I don’t know how it will go buying this ring sight-unseen for so much money (although less than most diamond engagement rings).

5- Any recommendations for other dealers?

Thank you :)

I am not an expert in sapphire, but I can tell that both of them are overpriced and have a huge window.

These two looks better, but you might want to ask for more photos (under different light):

I like the ring, though with that simplicity you could probably get a setting from multiple sources.

1 - Size wise, I think they're fine for a simple ring. That said I think you could go bigger without it being overwhelming or seeming "big" - the pear shape can be a little of an illusion as far as size. I'm a simple type and don't like things to be too big, but did have some 9x6 pear cabs and really, due to the shape, would not have considered that too huge. Your best bet is to get them in hand to really see the size.

2 - On color, I prefer #2, the first one looks a little washed out/grey to me, the second is closer to the nice royal blue I'd consider most attractive.

3 - Quality wise, again I'm not a huge expert here like some people, but I think the cutting leaves something to be desired. The second one has a pretty big window and for me this would be a deal killer. The first looks to have one too though not quite so obvious. From looking at NSC listings in the past, I suspect you could get something better for a comparable or even better price, though it may take some patience.

4 - I can't speak to this, my only experience with them is through the forums and looking. But again, I think you could probably do better.

5 - I'm sure the people here will have lots of recommendations. Depends a lot on your budget :)

The design you showed is a simple tube bezel attached to a plain rounded shank, which should be easily replicable by any vendor. Size is very personal so what is small to one person might be large to another. Unfortunately, I am of no help here other than to advise that sometimes a gem seems to "shrink" over time due to familiarity in our heads.

Sapphire 1 - might look a bit sleepy or hazy in person.
Sapphire 2 - better colouration

Both sapphires are windowed and for the size, you should be able to find something better easily if you aren't tied to the pear shape. Most vendors allow a review and return period. Take advantage of this prior to getting the stone set. Gemstones love to shift colours so what you see on the monitor may not be what you see in-hand most of the time.
