Hello all, I am back. After much delay. I got my contacts today! So far so good.

What''s your favorite healthy summer dessert? I guess the term "healthy" is relative. But I know I love fruit and whipped cream/cool whip or strawberry shortcake..now that isn''t healthy, but it sure is yum.

My favorite summer dessert.... sorbet! I also really like fruit and I''m thinking of doing a cream biscuit shortcake with some mint... mmmm!!!!

I was so bummed today at work! I had packed a snack of hummus, feta and cucumber slices, placed it in the fridge at work and my office manager THREW IT AWAY!!! She normally warns people so we can label but since so few people are there right now (meeting week) she went around and asked people if they had stuff in there, but she forgot to ask me!!! I was so upset! She apologized and I know she meant it, but STILL!!! Throw out my snack?!!?! UGH! Luckily it was so late in the day when I discovered it that I didn''t have time to run out and get anything that would derail me so I waited until I got home and had some almonds. Cooking dinner now. DH is coming down with my cold now that I''m finally feeling better!

Favorite Summer dessert? Ooooo, give me anything! Dessert is my weakness, and I did horribly last weekend...
Friday I didn''t have time for breakfast, so when I got to school I had a piece of cake that was in the fridge. Lunch, I had another cake that one of our research member brought (celebrating her graduation). I''ll let everyone know that substituting dessert for a meal makes you feel like crap! I got sugar high the entire day and my stomach sure didn''t feel well
The horrible thing is...By the next day I was ready to eat dessert again Yeah, I love dessert too much.
Over the weekend I''m ashamed to say I had some ice cream and smoothies. ah, did I say how much I love dessert?

Well, I had my wedding dress custom sized so I have to stay in shape until the end of next June at least, hopefully forever
I''ve applied for a membership to use the pool for the summer, so hopefully twice a week there will do me some good.

Oh favorite healthy summer dessert: watermelon. There's something about watermelon that's so quintessentially summer & associated with happy memories. I have a nice melon & mint skewer recipe that's pretty healthy & summer-y. And Sorbet.

I quit my gym today because it's not all that convenient for me. It stinks because I have membership till August. I joined it because it worked for my sister, but now she moved out. I found another gym I want to go to that's closer, read: more likely I'll go. Guess I'll have to wait till August.

Well, anyway, I wanted to bike to the gym today (FI has the car), but my bike has a flat, and I can't find my flat repair kit. I'm toying with walking my bike to a bike shop and having them fix it (meh), getting a repair kit from a shop (okay, but then I have to come back?? Boo). Hmmmm... somehow I'm going to need to get the motivation to get off my a$$.

Lunch was pretty successful, stir fried Chinese veggies, fruit & some quick homemade crab & corn chowder. Normally chowder would be a big no-no, but I made this so I know it's actually not that bad for me. Crab stock boiled with veggies (onions, ginger & carrots) for flavor, corn, egg, crushed tarragon, lowfat milk (not cream) & thickened with cornstarch. Dinner's going to be pulled pork sandwiches (not that healthy) and red cabbage slaw w/ vinaigrette not mayo dressing.

I have an easy substitute for your shortcake: angel food cake! Yum yum yum! It is low calorie and no fat, plus you can pile on the reduced calorie cool whip. I''m making my stomach growl...

I''m not a big dessert junkie.  My weaknesses are vodka, beer and fried stuff.  (WoW, I sound like such a guy!) 

Today I had a decent lunch, salad.  But after work I went to the bar and had...4 beers and some onion rings I split with a coworker. 

I need to get back into the habit of going to the gym.  And seriously, every time I post on here I think I have just come home from the bar.  I really don''t drink that much!

Oh and Sarah, in regards to last week''s post.  I feel okay at a 10-12, not "overweight" per se, but definitely not as fit as I''d like to be.  I''m about 5''6".  I''d be happy probably around a 6-8.  I''m not a small build by any means, but not really a large build either.  Pretty much medium.  I''m lucky in that I gain weight pretty much evenly distributed and I''m pretty much an hourglass figure, but I''d still like to be a bit smaller of an hourglass

I've been meaning to jump on this bandwagon for a while now... this is a great way to stay motivated!

My weight has constantly fluctuated my whole life. I have a tendency to put weight on easily, even though I eat relatively healthy. I think my main problems are portion size and exercise. Every couple of years I go on a mega health/exercise spree and lose large amounts of weight (up to 10 kilograms!)... but as soon as I feel comfortable I tend to let it slip and then pile it all back on again.

At the moment I am quite a bit heavier than I should be. For my wedding next year (September, hopefully) I would love to lose 10kg and get down to a very comfortable size 6. I am 5'9" and at the moment I am about an 8-10. (I hope I converted those sizes correctly - In Australia I am a 12-14 but need to get down to an Aussie 10)

I'm off to a really good start. I have basically halved my portions and limited carbs and unnecessary fats. I've also been jogging every day. I take my dog, Millie to the local football oval (see pic) and do laps around the track and short stints up and down the hill (really kills the legs!) Today I did 4 laps and about 10 minutes of incline jogging up and down the surrounding hill. I love it - my dog runs with me and it's good for her, too.

food intake today: mandarin, chicken & vegetable soup, 2 slices soy linseed bread and for dinner I'm having atlantic salmon fillet with grilled vegetables.

How do you get your dog to run with you? My pooch isn''t much of a runner. She prefers to run a bit then stop & sniff and run a bit then stop & sniff. It really breaks the momentum and makes it hard to start up again. You must have a really good doggie. :)

I ran (mostly, walked some) about 4.25 miles last night after my post. I was talking to my FI and he suggests I run along the lake front (I live in Chicago), he says it makes for a way easier run. I never tried it, maybe I''ll give it a go when I get up to doing 5+ consistently.

Today''s goal: walk the dog to a bike shop & get a patch kit. Then hit the gym! I''m paying for it till August, might as well use it!

Question, does anyone know how to get out of paying my July payment for the gym I quit? I don''t see why I have to pay for it. When I joined I paid 1 month''s fee in advance, so it''s not like they''re out any money. I feel like they''re trying to extort that July payment outta me and it''s just not fair.

I''m up a few pounds this week.   The drinking on Friday night and the greasy food Saturday had a hand in that I am sure.

I was sore for 3 days from the workout on Thursday and I just did it a 2nd time yesterday morning.  I worked my abs hard and they are burning today. It feels pretty good, but I wasn''t able to wake up and do it again this morning.

I had a chocolate dipped Drunkstick cone last night.

I went to the dr. this morning for my annual exam. She noticed that I had lost weight since my visit last year and complimented me on it. I''m still way off from goal, but that was the first time I hadn''t been hassled about it at the dr! She wanted to know what I''ve been doing and she made notes on everything. So this time next year I will really wow her!

I think my challenge this week is bouncing back from illness... haven''t felt like exercising yet, but I''d like to be able to go to my yoga class on Saturday, so that''s a goal in my head. The real problem is that DH''s brother and sis-in-law are in town this week and we have to go to his mom''s house to see them. I''m not looking forward to that. I think I will eat before I go though so I have an excuse when she starts passing out the bad food.

Oooh Sum, what kind of yoga do you do? I''ve tried a few, Vinyasa, Ashtanga & Bikram (whew!). I kept feeling like I had no idea what I was doing. Probably because I had no idea what I was doing. Bikram was the only one that I kinda got a hang of because you always do the same thing every time. But it''s like signing up for a sweatbox treatment. The upside is I felt awesome afterwards and did lose a fair bit of weight in a week''s time. For anyone that is interested, drink LOTS of water before you go. I''d drink 3L before my sessions.

Well, it''s a "new" kind. The class is called Yoga for weight loss, but the actual workout is YRG, Yoga for Regular Guys/Gals. It''s a mix of yoga and calisthenics designed to get your heart rate up to an aerobic level while moving through the poses and increasing flexibility. The class is in a heated room like Bikram, but I don''t know if there''s a specific style it''s closest to. I really love it, and it''s the only exercise I''ve found that I look forward to, plus I''m really seeing results.

My instructor is one of only 2 in the mid-Atlantic area, but you''ll probably hear more about it soon... They are doing an INFOMERCIAL!!! I thought that was hilarious, but I think a lot more people need to try the workout. It''s great if you aren''t into working out or think you can''t do yoga. My instructor is especially inspirational because when he started doing the workout, he couldn''t walk. He lost 140 pounds in less than a year(!) (need a results not typical disclaimer here) and can not only walk, he can run, and teach the class. Go to You Tube and look up Art Boorman. It will blow your mind! I don''t know if I can post the video link here or not.

Hi guys, just a quick hello... running late for work!!

I just went for a run again this morning with Millie (lliang_chi the stadium grounds are fully enclosed and you can have your dog off the lead. She does stop and sniff a lot but I just continue running and when I get to far from her she comes speeding up to me again... she''s quite good, she makes sure she''s close at all times and I just keep checking back to see where she is without stopping. You should try to find an off lead park somewhere to run with your doggie!?)

mjso: I didn''t drink until I was 21..really. I actually waited until 21! But..now that I am past 21..I do drink. Uh oh! My weaknesses alcohol-wise include basically any fruity drink. I love daiquiris and rum runners, etc. I love rum and vodka. Oh and Mike''s Hard Lemonade..yeah that''s a softy drink I know, but it''s sooo good! I tried the light version and I hated it, yuck! Oh and I am with you on the fried foods, yum. I understand what you''re saying about wanting to be a bit smaller, and hey since it''s more for health then I say go for it! cincin090: Welcome to the thread if I haven''t welcomed you already!! Sorry for not keeping it up the past few days. Hard to stay motivated when I am slacking so much! I will do better.


So as you all know I''ve been slacking. Although I drank a lot of water the past few days for me! I had a great time trying on my dress, and I could actually see and feel my weight loss. I was on the second notch when they hooked it! Which means I am too small for the third, but too large for the first. So I want to lose at least 10-15 more lbs before the wedding and get the first notch. Going and trying on the dress did give me new goals and hopefully some motivation! No I know it will be motivation I will turn it into motivation. I want to lose those lbs to make first/tightest notch on the dress and tone my arms! Something else happened to me: I drank a mini 100 calorie I think it is coca cola yesterday. It was a regular one..and for the first time in my life it was too sweet. I never thought I would start to feel regular cokes are too sweet. I used to drink only soda after soda all day. I am so happy! It''s all about habit I guess. Now I need to do this with regular sweets and I will really be getting on track.

So with my renewed motivation for weight loss, I am going to try again tomorrow to eat a bit better. Maybe instead of getting fries at the Mexican restaurant..yes..fries..I will get the rice. Rice still isn''t great, BUT it''s better for me than the fries or hush puppies I bet. Could be wrong. I go back to school next week, so woohoo back to eating with FI! He''s been doing better than me lately it seems. Uh oh! Bad Sarah. Maybe that means we can FINALLY keep each other on track. Anyway everyone, thanks for keeping everything going in my absence and I enjoy reading all of your successes and supporting you through any bumps. I won''t call them set-backs because every bump in the road is just a learning experience for tomorrow. Oh and keep those desserts coming, yum! I have a question for you guys - how do you tell people that you are trying to lose weight/eat healthier? I am not obviously overweight, I hold most of it in my hips and thighs and so my upper body is actually pretty slender. And, I only have about 10 lbs left to lose. But, the reaction I get a lot of times, particularly if I turn down a brownie or something, is "What?! You shouldn''t be dieting! You''re too skinny already!" I don''t want to offend them by refusing their food, but this kind of reaction puts me off guard. I know they''re trying to be nice, but I don''t want to say "yeah, you''re right, give me that brownie!" and I am not the kind of person who will say "oh yeah, but you haven''t seen my butt in a bikini!" So at the moment I say something lame like...I try to save my treats for the weekend or something.

I think the biggest issue for me, eating wise, is this kind of ''casual'' eating. Situations where there is food left out, like cookies left over from a meeting at work (why must every meeting have cookies?) or people going for drinks after work...if there is a plate of appetizers in front of me I just HAVE to eat them. That is the hardest part - I don''t want to be anti-social, but it can really drag me down...

Hey rockzilla! Good to hear from you. Hmmm...I think I would say that I am trying to cut back on sweets. And if people say why are you dieting you''re too skinny, I''d say that I''m just trying to tone and look my best. Are you aiming for something like that?

Yeah, that is my goal. I just have slight bulge in the hips/legs/belly area that I would feel a lot better about if I got down about 10 pounds. Its one of those things where I can totally camouflage it with clothes, for the most part, but I want to feel great about wearing a swimsuit (especially since I am moving back to la!)

I know I will always be pear shaped and will never have a heidi klum body, and I''m okay with that, but being a bit more toned would help a ton with my self confidence.

Sounds good to be! People need to understand that, just tell them I don''t think I am fat or anything I just want to look my best and toned!

The school shut down the swimming pool for the week so I couldn't swim But yesterday evening wasn't too hot so I jogged instead

How are you losing 10lbs? I would like to hear your secrets...Last year I lost more than 20lbs, but it took more than 10 months to do so, and it was HELL. I haven't touched a single hamburger since I started, but I can't live forever like that. I like my grease and sugar!

Claire, Hm... I can't find any big off leash parks that I can run around near my neighborhood. But one of my neighbors said there's a track by a university that I guess I can check out. Thanks! I'm so mad at my dog today... 1) she woke me up @ 3AM, I took her outside & NOTHING. 2) woke me up again @ 4:30. 3) when I fed her @ 6:30, after her breakfast she made her way into the pantry and got into my friend's dog's (I'm doggie-sitting) food.

Sum, you yoga sounds great!!! I'm looking to see if they have that in Chicago.

Choro, I *love* sweet potato fries!!! Or chips. Mmmmm!!! Try making them in the oven for a little healthier snack. I like to sprinkle some spices (cumin, coriander seed, madras curry powder & cayenne) on them, coat with olive oil & spread them on a wire rack (you use to cool cookies) and put the wire rack on a cookie sheet. I back them for a few mins @ 375F. When you start to smell them, they're done. Mmmmm

Some free weight exercises to tone your arms. Pick up whatever weight you're comfortable with. Pull your stomach in to protect your core. The best way to do that is to exhale completely so your tummy gets "sucked in" and then keep it that way.
1) kick backs--you lean over a bench so you body is parallel, your arm is perpendicular (e.g. pick up the dumbbell from the groud). You kick back your arm so it's parallel. During the whole time, make sure your shoulder blade is engaged, that is pull it down your back. Best way to do this is to keep your shoulders down and not scrunched up on your neck. You work on one arm @ a time.
2) shoulder presses--seated, hold both dumbells like they're perched on your shoulders. Then extend your arms up to the ceiling one at a time (right 1, left 1, Right 2, left 2, etc) slowly with control. E.g. on your entire exhale, slowly bring your right arm up. On the entire exhale slowly bring it down. Repeat for the left. That is one repetition. Through this whole thing, pull your stomach in to protect your core.
3) simulate punches--stand, feet shoulder width apart. Pull your stomach in to protect your core. Hold your dumbbells at your waist much like how cheerleaders start out their cheers. (arms down along sides, elbows bent so your fists are aligned with your chest) Then exactly how it sounds, one hand at a time, throw a punch straight out in front of you and return to original position.
These are all easy exercises you can do at home.

Oh yeah and FI said he wants to do a triathlon by the end of the summer. We did one when we first started dating, and I didn't train for it AT ALL. I actually want to train and see how much better I do. Anyone know of any tri's in the Chicagoland/midwest area around August? And if you do, wanna join me???

lliang..thanks for the great tips!  Question...what is the best arm workout for the area right under the armpit?  Above the bicep and tricep. My friend said it was the one where you lay down flat on the floor, both arms out beside you so you''re shaped like a "T", then bring arms straight up above you in the air and back down. That seems to work out the shoulders. My problem spot is below the shoulder but above those main muscles. I''m trying to attach a picture, but it doesn''t like me right now.

Oh gosh, RZ... I haven''t been participating in these threads, but I had to post when I saw this.

This kind of reaction is the BANE of my existence!! I remember that it started in middle school. I used to always brush my hair between classes (a little obsessive, yes), and one day a tomboyish girl said to me, "Why are you always brushing your hair? You have the prettiest hair in school, you don''t need to brush it all the time!" I didn''t know what to say, but I remember thinking, "Well, what do you think the reason I have pretty hair is??"

I think this is (or can be) sort of the same thing. "Why are you dieting?? You''re so thin!" At least for me, watching what I eat has become a lifetime/lifestyle thing. So the only thing to say is "Your second sentence answered your first", but that''s rude. I guess, "I''m dieting so that I can stay that way"? Or in your case you could say, "It''s not about the weight, I''m just trying to stay really healthy lately." Or "I''m detoxing"

I hope I don''t sound obnoxious or stuck up in this post, I don''t intend it that way at all but can see how it might come off as that.

I get those comments all the time.  Now, instead of telling people that I''m trying to lose weight I just say "No thank you" when they offer me something.  If they push, I follow-up with a "I just finished eating" or "I just brushed my teeth."  That way no one hassles me about always eating healthy or needing to treat myself, etc.

rockzilla - just say that you eat healthy (you don''t have to say that you''re dieting).  and if someone says you''re already thin, just say that because you eat healthy you stay thin.  makes sense to me.

*sigh*...I wish I can just say "NO" when people order food...It''s one of my weakness I love social eating. If we have an appetizer, I must eat. If someone says "let''s order dessert" I say yes...Somebody smack me in the head.

I definitely have the opposite problem of social eating.  I''m great when people are around as far as food goes (alcohol is another issue).  I feel like everyone is "judging" what I eat, so I find it easy to say "no" when people offer pizza, snacks, ice cream, etc at work or whatever.

I am a total alone eater.  I make awful choices if it is just me.  I guess I feel like no one will know, so its okay (or something equally wrong). 

The more comfortable I become around someone the worse my food habits become around them.

Guess I just need to be around strangers every time I eat!

Just had soup today...don''t know what we are doing for dinner, but I am definitely dying of thirst!! I really want to make some suntea this weekend.

And I NEED to get back to the gym next week.
