Diamonds may be a girl's best friend, but rhinestones can command top dollar at auction, especially when they were worn by the one of the world's most iconic celebrities. A pair of shoulder-dusting rhinestone earrings worn by Marilyn Monroe garnered a whopping $185,000 at Julien's "Hollywood Legends" auction on April 11 and 12 in Beverly Hills.

Sotheby's Makes History with Highest Total Jewelry Sale, $83 Million Pink Diamond Sets World Record

On November 13, 2013, Sotheby's Geneva made history when it sold the 59.60-carat Pink Star diamond for $83 million, a world auction record for a diamond and any gemstone or jewel. And the auction house also achieved the "highest jewelry sale total in history," as its Magnificent Jewels sale garnered $199.5 million.

59-Carat "Pink Star" Diamond Sells for World Record $83 Million

On November 13, 2013, the 59.60-carat Pink Star diamond set a world record, selling for $83 million at Sotheby's Geneva. Known as the most valuable diamond ever offered at auction, the Pink Star surpassed its estimate of $60 million. "It's a large amount of money in itself but I don't think this stone has a price," said David Bennet, chairman of Sotheby's jewelry department in Europe and the Middle East.

14.82-Carat Orange Diamond Sells for Record $35.5 Million at Christie's

The largest fancy vivid orange diamond ever offered at auction fetched $35.5 million ($2.4 million per carat) at Christie's Geneva on November 12, 2013. The 14.82-carat diamond, dubbed The Orange, set a new world record price per carat for any diamond sold at auction and a world record price for an orange diamond.

Rare Burmese Rubies to Heat Up Christie's Hong Kong Auction

A selection of rare Burmese rubies will lead Christie's Hong Kong Magnificent Jewels auction on November 26, 2013. The auction, which will include over 300 colored gemstone and diamond jewels, is expected to fetch approximately $90 million. Highlighting the sale is the "Crimson Garland" suite by Etcetera with an unheated Burmese ruby and diamond necklace estimated to sell for $4.8 to $7.2 million and a pair of unheated Burmese ruby and diamond earrings expected to fetch between $1.8 and $3.2 million. Christie's described the rubies as vivid "pigeon's blood" red with 99.98 carats total of rubies and over 70 carats of diamonds combined.

Back in 2011 we wondered what would happen to Kim Kardashian's engagement ring after her split with basketball player Kris Humphries. They were technically married after all (albeit for 72 days), so many wondered whether she would give the ring back, keep it, or sell it. Kardashian's mother said, “It’s a gift. Keep your gift." But some viewed the marriage as a sham and wished it returned to Humphries. Well the ring, which cost a reported $2 million, resurfaced at Christie's New York Magnificent Jewels sale today and sold for $749,000.

Christie's to Auction Ultra-Rare 14-Carat Orange Diamond

An ultra-rare 14.82-carat fancy vivid orange diamond will lead Christie's Magnificent Jewels auction in Geneva on November 12, 2013.
