Russian Diamond Cut Studies, Diamond Calculator and Gem Adviser

Researchers from Moscow State University (MSU) have developed specialized unique software that analyses light return and models the appearance of a cut diamond.

The MSU researchers used the developed software to study the round brilliant cut in order to find optimal brilliance and fire of a diamond as a function of its proportions. First results of these studies were published in 1999.

During these studies Russian scientists obtained new results on brilliance and fire and recently arrived to a new understanding of the human perception of brilliance.

One of the practical results of the work has been the creation of the Diamond Calculator, a software allowing to vary and calculate the weight, size and cut parameters, the illumination conditions, and optical characteristics of the gem material. It generates photorealistic 3D images of diamonds of different shapes. With this software, you may observe ray-tracing, inclusion reflections, and other optical effects that occur in diamonds.

DiamCal is used now by many experts and labs including GIA1 and Garry Holloway, and consumers looking for advanced understanding of the diamond cut. More on DiamCalc...

Latest version of the DaimCalc allows analyze the real diamonds and give recommendations on their performance such as light return and leakage, fisheye and nailhead effects, fire, scintillation and contrast. You also can try GemAdviser, a free application that allows analyzing performance of the selected diamonds.
