HCA - Defining the Beauty and Desirability of Round Brilliant Diamonds

Abstract

Round diamond cut grading-systems have been largely based on Tolkowsky’s 1919 design, but convergent scientific studies highlight the shortcomings in the ‘tolerances’ applied by various institutions. Cut grading systems have failed to account for inter-relationships between facet angles and proportions. As well there are differing preferences of individuals and geographic markets. Surely today’s sophisticated consumer has higher expectations of cut grading standards?
 
Observations of both real and virtual diamonds led me to design a new approach to cut grading that considers the inter-related nature of facet proportions. The Holloway Cut Adviser (HCA) gives a numerical and verbal prediction of the appearance of round brilliant cut diamonds based on it Sarin proportions. HCA is available as stand alone patent pending software. A simplified Internet service also rates the performance of diamonds. HCA enables users to filter out and avoid diamonds with proportion combinations that will perform poorly.
 
Adding HCA to rough diamond analyzers will lead to improvements in both cutting weight yields and diamond beauty.
